Men and Their Emotions: Anger

The three posts after the introduction in this current series focused on “Why” men need to manage their emotions, “How” God’s gift of emotions became distorted, and “What” do with our emotions to become more godly men. In this next post, I get into the first of the 8 emotions that I believe men need to learn how to manage: our Anger.  Anger is one of the most challenging emotions for men, especially since it is most often associated with negative reactions leading to poor choices, damaged relationships, and sometimes even violence. Unfortunately, many men never learned to experience and express anger in a healthy manner. They use anger to hide their hurt and fear because those aren’t considered “manly” emotions. Unhealthy anger gives us the illusion of maintaining power or control but it actually conceals our true feelings and blinds our ability to identify the wrong that’s been done.

Men and Their Emotions: The What

The last two posts explained the “Why” we need to manage our emotions and the “How” of God gifted us the emotions that became distorted by original sin that still affect us today. Those two posts, plus this one about the “What” to do, provide the backbone for how we can become more godly men by controlling our emotions. Here is the list again of the emotions that I believe men need to learn how to manage: Anger Fear (especially, our fear of failure) Sadness Happiness Pridefulness (Ego & Power) Guilt (Shame) Anxiety (Worry) Boredom (Aloneness) As I go through the “What” of each emotion, I will organize each post into 4-parts that I hope you will find helpful: define the emotion describe the environmental and physiological reaction provide some biblical context suggest an appropriate response for God Buddies Emotions Fundamentally Defined Let’s first understand that emotions are a part of

Men and Their Emotions: The How

In last week’s post about the “Why” of why guys need to learn to manage their emotions, I indicated Jesus was the only one who could properly manage His emotions since He was God and we were not. I also suggested we needed a heart transformation as we learn more about managing our emotions.  In order to start the transformation though, it’s important that we know “How” our hearts became distorted before we can know “What” to do about it. As you read in the last post, Simon Sinek suggests this same methodology for any problem: determine the “Why” first, and then the “How”, before you decide on “What” to do. So how did we receive emotions in the first place and how did they become distorted sinful reactions? God Created Emotions A Christian perspective on emotions originates in the creation of humanity. God created humans with the ability to
